Why thyssenkrupp
runs a Garage?

Thinking outside the box – that's what the #tkGarage is about. We want to stop doing things the same old way just because it's always been that way. Instead, we seek to improve our business by constantly challenging the ordinary. By creating exceptional breakthrough ideas in high-speed time. And by leveraging innovations in a fast and consequent way.

How we work
10 principles that
make a difference

Innovations don't just happen. In fact, they require a culture of autonomity and agility within our organization. These 10 principles guide us towards our goal.

1invest

in chunks

  • run in project chunks of max. 4 months
  • interweave with day job
  • bring max. 2 team members per investor

2think

fundamentally

  • problem-solve using first principles, not current truths
  • anticipate behaviors and needs
  • seek challenging from experienced rethinkers

3look
for
mindset

  • bring in passionate people who made broad life experiences
  • look for IQ+EQ
  • enrich with technical experts

4build a
purpose

  • co-create: the joint journey is everything
  • be stubborn on your vision, flexible on how to get there
  • excite colleagues and partners

5think
exponentially

  • always ask „what does it look like 10x bigger, 100x bigger?“
  • focus on the 5 exponential steps required, not the 95 incremental steps
  • create a hyped movement

6GID: get
it done

  • create real proof, not just theory
  • build the proof within days
  • use specialists for purely transactional tasks

7be
rapid

  • let the team decide
  • learn fast with competing concepts
  • find those who can help, and ask for help

8use your
senses

  • start solution-free to focus on a future need
  • immerse into real experiences
  • listen to people and how they feel

9engage your
users

  • leave the desk and create unique insights
  • observe and immerse into users
  • commit customers & partners early

10enable, enable,
enable

  • leaders clear the road
  • challenge with questions
  • boost confidence, push to dare

How it feels to
work here

Much like a treasure hunt. We kick off with a clearly defined problem and analyze it: Is it of major relevance? Does it bear the potential? Can it be scaled fast? Only then our teams start working on concrete solutions. Their tools? Whatever helps. Prototyping methods, 3D prints, paper models, code or even Lego bricks.
