For many years now, we have been systematically working to improve energy efficiency in our production and developing - in collaboration with our suppliers and customers - solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The success of these efforts is regularly confirmed by external sources. In 2025, thyssenkrupp was included on the CDP’s A-List for the tenth consecutive year.
With our climate strategy, we are setting ambitious goals:
We aim to be climate-neutral by 2050 at the latest. In Germany, in accordance with the provisions of the German Climate Protection Act, we are already aiming to achieve this by 2045. This applies to our direct emissions (Scope 1), emissions from energy consumption (Scope 2), and emissions in our value chain (Scope 3).
In fiscal year 2024/2025, we significantly raised our ambition on the path to this long-term goal in order to achieve an emissions reduction in line with the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement. We had our climate targets reviewed by the Science Based Targets initiativeSBTi and confirmed as compliant with the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement in accordance with the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard.
The base year for all thyssenkrupp climate targets is 2018.
Our businesses have developed roadmaps and action plans for meeting the ambitious targets. Success in achieving climate targets is a criterion for the long-term compensation of the Executive Board and senior executives (compensation report).
Energy efficiency is a thyssenkrupp wide priority. Since 2013, we have been implementing our GEEP program (Groupwide Energy Efficiency Program) including concrete measurable ambitious targets.
The conscious use of renewable energies is an important lever, because the availability of energy will remain a necessity, despite all energy efficiency efforts.
Within the steel production, we follow two approaches to reduce CO2 emissions. On the one hand, Carbon2Chem (C2C). Carbon2Chem produces valuable chemicals using waste gases from the steel production and delivers a sustainable carbon source for unavoidable basic elements of chemistry as alternative fuels, fertilizers or plastics..
On the other hand, we believe in carbon direct avoidance (CDA) – using hydrogen instead of coal as a reducing agent, so that no CO2 is produced at this stage of the steelmaking process. We will successively replace coal and coke, first with natural gas and then with hydrogen as the reducing agent, thus avoiding the emission of carbon dioxide altogether. Here, we are relying on a new process: we combine a 100% hydrogen-capable direct reduction plant with two integrated electric melters to produce climate-friendly pig iron. Through this innovative concept, we can continue offering our customers the full range of high-quality steel grades, thereby contributing to making downstream value chain stages climate-neutral as well. This integrated approach will enable climate neutrality in our own steel operations by 2045.
The indirect climate effects of our supply chain exceed our direct emissions by a multiple. Especially in the use phase of our products by our customers, high potential exists to avoid greenhouse gas emissions. That is where we are developing and offering a variety of intelligent solutions:
The cement plant of the future is based on ourOxyfuel technology to produce cement. Considering the process, CO2 cannot be fully avoided. Due to the nature of the process, the generation of CO2 cannot be avoided entirely, but it is concentrated to a degree that allows for efficient capture – either for material utilization in CCU (carbon capture and utilization) plants or for feed-in into available CO2 infrastructure.
Greenhouse gas neutrality will not become reality without sustainably produced hydrogen. Therefore, we built upalkaline hydrogen electrolysis. Our technology enables a flexible operation.
The fertilizer production is critical to ensure the nutrition of a growing world population.EnviNOx avoids laughing gas emissions, that are 300 times more harmful than CO2, and additionally nearly the NOx emissions.
Greenhouse gas emissions in the mobility sector can be reduced through ouralternative fuels or our components for electric mobility.
At thyssenkrupp we are firmly committed to the international targets of the Paris Climate Agreement and their national implementation. In doing so we want to make a significant and rapid contribution to decarbonization while at the same time maintaining a high-performance industrial region. Climate protection though is a true challenge for society-at-large and requires common solutions and joint implementation from companies, politics and civil society alike. Our direct and indirect engagement is consistently in line with our commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement. thyssenkrupp plays an active role on multiple levels:
Climate protection only works globally and requires an adequate regulatory framework. thyssenkrupp is engaged in the political dialog and is a regular at the UN climate conferences (COP).
We also advance our positions through federations and trade associations and are actively involved in key bodies such as the BDI´s climate activities in Berlin (German Federation of Industry).
Our employees are the backbone of successful climate action and are multipliers of our efforts.
Bringing climate action into the supply chain and to our customers is core business for us. We promote transparency regarding emissions in the procurement of goods and services, and provide our customers with product carbon footprints as well as specific emissions data.
We engage in dialog with science and research on multiple levels. We regularly participate in collaborativ research projects and maintain close cooperation with universities, research institutions, think tanks, and various committees.
