Artificial intelligence in logisticsHow AI makes supply chains smarter

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming logistics. It helps companies manage supply chains more efficiently, deploy resources more effectively and continuously optimize processes.

Artificial intelligence is transforming logistics

Christian Jabs works in Sustainability & Supply Chain Management at pacemaker.ai, a company of tk accelis. In this interview, he explains how artificial intelligence is transforming logistics, why digital skills are becoming increasingly important, and why people will continue to play a crucial role in the future.

Supply chain management: The backbone of modern supply chains

Supply chain management ensures that materials and products are available at the right time, in the right quantity and at the right place. At the same time, processes need to be designed as efficiently as possible while reducing resource use and CO₂ emissions.

For Christian Jabs, one factor is particularly important: transparency.

“Together with our customers, we are working to shape the world of tomorrow. We connect wherever possible. We design processes collaboratively and transparently so that we can fully unlock the potential along the entire supply chain.”

Today, modern supply chains would be almost unimaginable without digital technologies. Data provides the foundation for analyzing processes, making informed decisions and continuously improving supply chains.

AI makes supply chains smarter

With pacemaker.ai, tk accelis helps companies optimize their supply chains using data-driven insights. The AI platform analyzes historical data and generates precise forecasts for inventory levels, customer demand and transportation routes. This enables companies to optimize inventories, use resources more efficiently and make their supply chains more resilient.

“This is where people and machines work hand in hand."

For Christian Jabs, however, this is about far more than economic efficiency. “In addition to optimizing inventory, our primary goal is to reduce our customers’ carbon footprint.” The integrated AI continuously improves its forecasts based on new data and helps companies respond more quickly and make better-informed decisions when changes occur along the supply chain.

pacemaker.ai now operates internationally, serving customers around the world. Since 2022, it has been an independent company and a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Materials Services. Its focus is on the core markets of the automotive and aviation industries, where it can remain close to its existing customers.

AI still needs people

What will the logistics of the future look like? For Christian Jabs, one thing is clear: Artificial intelligence will play an increasingly important role. At the same time, people will remain indispensable. “AI is only ever as good as the data it is based on. It is a tool. People set the direction, and the machine learns.”

In his view, AI does not replace people; it helps them make better decisions. Working with complex data will become increasingly important in the future - and so will roles such as data scientists and experts in digital supply chains.

Stay curious and shape the future

Anyone entering the world of work today should view digital transformation as an opportunity. Christian Jabs advises students and young professionals to remain open to new technologies and find a topic that genuinely inspires them. “Find a future-focused topic you are truly passionate about - and stay curious.” His story shows how digitalization, artificial intelligence and sustainable supply chains are already transforming everyday working life - and the exciting career opportunities this creates.
