Racing to the finish line at 140 kph - Develop the stars of tomorrow with us
This year's luge World Cup already came to a close and the Winter Games in Beijing, China are just around the corner. The German luge team Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken - famous for top performances in the ice track - will be there! thyssenkrupp has been working with the two athletes since 2014 on the technology of the ideal luge sled. Develop the stars of tomorrow with us - in sports and on the road – at thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology!
Famous for 140 kph and 0 boredom.
Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken have been competing as doubles since 2010. Only two years after their debut, the two athletes could already get a taste of World Cup air. At the 2012 World Luge Championships in Altenberg, Saxony, Germany they stood on the podium together for the first time: winning silver in the doubles and gold in the team relay! However, despite a successful season, they did not make it onto the podium at the 2014 Olympics in Sotchi, Russia. The duo was materially outclassed and only made it to eighth place. A personal defeat for the two athletes.
thyssenkrupp & Team Eggert/Benecken
For Toni Eggert it quickly became clear that the necessary step to success was to get the best out of the sled. In 2014, the athletes therefore found a partner in thyssenkrupp who not only supported the team financially but also provided them with technological expertise.
The breakthrough on the blue racer followed shortly afterwards: The sponsorship bore fruit in their first season together. Toni and Sascha achieved their first overall World Cup victory and continued to build on their success year after year: They won the European Championship title, defended the overall World Cup 2017/2018 with the highest total points score ever and fulfilled a childhood dream by winning the World Championships 2017 in Innsbruck, Austria! A winning streak followed with three more overall World Cup victories and the long-awaited first Olympic medal: bronze in PyeongChang, South Korea 2018.
Nevertheless, the doubles team is not yet fully satisfied. The clear goal for this year's season: the highly desired Olympic gold medal in Beijing, China.
Famous for achieving best performance as a team
Even world champions start small and need supporters. Toni and Sascha have worked hard to achieve their success - with many training sessions on and off the ice track and many more hours in the workshop. Because in luge, the construction of the sled is just as important as the ideal line on the track. Since 2014 thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology has been supporting the luge duo and working together with the athletes on the development of their blue racer.
The technology behind Toni and Sascha's sled was fine-tuned for top performance at thyssenkrupp sites including Ilsenburg in Germany and Eschen in Lichtenstein. The fine-tuning always happened in close exchange with the lugers. After all, no one knows the demands on the sled and every detail of the tracks as well as pilot Toni Eggert. A unique project for our engineers, lightweight construction experts and designers as well as a huge support for the athletes.
Millimeter precision work on the ice and in the workshop
While Sascha and Toni are preparing for World Cups and Winter Games, the thyssenkrupp team is always watching their backs: From measuring the sled in millimeter-precise 3D models and high-quality materials to developing optimal blade variants for all weather and ice conditions.
A partnership from which both sides are continuously learning. thyssenkrupp supports the lugers with its expertise in material development and helps the athletes set up their sled competitively with innovative solutions and state-of-the-art technology. Toni and Sascha thus have more time for training and the engineers at thyssenkrupp can prove their technical expertise in untested territory. The common understanding: Setbacks and technical problems are part of the game and are solved together as a team on an equal level.
For the experts at thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology, innovative solutions play an important role in achieving top performance, and not just in winter sports. When they are not building sleds, the engineers are busy thinking about how we will get around in the future:
Famous for the electrifying mobility of tomorrow.
With the world's population growing and the climate crisis looming, the need for new, innovative and sustainable powertrain and mobility solutions is increasing.
