Uhde wins contracts for the construction of new coke oven batteries in China and Japan
The Chinese company Taiyuan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. (TISCO) has commissioned Uhde GmbH in Dortmund to build two coke oven batteries with respective capacities of approximately 1.0 million tonnes of blast furnace coke a year in Taiyuan, some 500 km south-west of Beijing in Shanxi Province.
Uhde`s scope of services will include the engineering, supply of critical equipment and performance of services pertaining to the erection work supervision and commissioning for the first battery. The Chinese company Anshan Coking & Refractory Engineering Consulting Corporation (ACRE) will take on a large part of the detail engineering.
The new coke oven batteries will each include 70 large-capacity coke ovens with a chamber height of 7.6 m and an effective volume of some 76 m3. Each battery will have a daily throughput of approximately 4,200 t of coal, producing about 3,000 t of coke each. The first coke oven battery is due to come onstream in late 2005. The construction of the second battery will then follow.
Uhde has also won a separate contract from JFE Steel Corporation of Japan, who are looking to increase their coke production by some 630,000 t of coke a year through the construction of a new coke oven battery at their site in Fukuyama, some 200 km west of Osaka.
The new battery will consist of 55 ovens and meet the coke requirements for a blast furnace currently under construction. The plant complies with the stringent Japanese environmental regulations and combines state-of-the-art technology with respect to the heating of the ovens and the minimisation of waste gas emissions.
The contract includes the basic and detail engineering, supply of critical equipment and performance of services pertaining to the erection work supervision and commissioning. The contract will be executed in conjunction with Otto Corporation, Tokyo. The coke oven battery is scheduled to come onstream in February 2006.
"These two contracts underline the high degree of competence we enjoy in the field of coking technology worldwide," said Hans Joachim Lensing, a member of Uhde`s Executive Board. Uhde integrated the business of Bochum-based ThyssenKrupp EnCoke GmbH in April 2004, thus adding coking technologies to its range.
Uhde is a company in the Technologies segment of the ThyssenKrupp Group and has a workforce of more than 3,700 employees worldwide. The company`s activities focus on the design and construction of chemical and other industrial plants in the following fields: refining technologies, fertilisers, organic intermediates and polymers, electrolysis, gas technologies, gasification of oil, coal and residues, coking technologies and pharmaceuticals.
