Transrapid: Contract from China
The positive decision towards the realization of the Shanghai Project is the breakthrough for this innovative train system on the world market. This application concerns a 30km connection between Pudong Shanghai International Airport and the Shanghai financial district Lujiazui.
The contract was signed on January 23, 2001 in the presence of the Mayor of Shanghai Xu Kuangdi and the representatives of the consortium involved - namely Transrapid International, Siemens and ThyssenKrupp.
The first operation is planned for the beginning of 2003 in order to demonstrate that the Maglev system Transrapid is also suitable as a very high speed system for operation on medium and long distances. This means that apart from the economic significance of this transportation development, the airport connector can be seen as a pilot scheme for further Transrapid routes in China.
In the rush hour, the train will run every 10 minutes. The daily operational time from 5am to 11pm totals 18 hours. The journey time is only 7 minutes. The operational speed is 430 km/h. By the beginning of 2003, the vehicle fleet will comprise 3 vehicles with 6 sections each.
Thyssen Transrapid System GmbH, Kassel, is part of ThyssenKrupp AG's new Technologies segment. It is responsible for manufacturing and integrating core Transrapid components at its Kassel location and for the relevant engineering, which is carried out in Munich in a joint venture with the Automotive segment, ThyssenKrupp Automotive Mechatronics GmbH. Via Thyssen Transrapid System GmbH, ThyssenKrupp - along with Siemens - has an interest in Transrapid International GmbH & Co. KG, Berlin, which markets the Transrapid system worldwide.
