"We`re not passive bystanders"

On February 28, 2002 the Group Youth and Apprentices Association (KJAV) of ThyssenKrupp is staging a Groupwide Action Day against xenophobia and intolerance. At more than 50 ThyssenKrupp locations the local associations will be organizing events to raise awareness of the issue among employees and the general community, while at other sites posters and badges will focus attention on the issue.

The idea was first sparked off at the EXPO 2000 world exposition in Hanover, where the apprentices working at ThyssenKrupp`s Youth Information Forum (YIF) met up with people from all over the world. For many of the young people here, the idea of tolerance towards other nationalities became a very personal concern - not least because ThyssenKrupp has almost 90,000 employees in over 70 countries outside Germany and generates two thirds of its total sales abroad.

"The young people at ThyssenKrupp want to get the message across at all locations that there is no place at ThyssenKrupp for xenophobia and racial hatred," say Fritz Alexander Gaul, chairman of the Group Youth and Apprentices Association. The young people have the support of the Group`s labor director Dieter Hennig and the ThyssenKrupp Group Works Council. On February 28 Hennig will visit the Dortmund plant of Thyssen Schulte, where an extensive program of events is planned.
