ThyssenKrupp Mexinox - manufacturer of stainless steel flat products in Mexico
With a 1,000-strong workforce and sales - including two subsidiaries - of some 350 million euros in the fiscal year ending September 30, 2001, ThyssenKrupp Mexinox S.A. de C.V., San Luis PotosÌ, is the only manufacturer of cold-rolled stainless steel products in the Central American state of Mexico. A total 200,000 metric tons of stainless, acid and heat resistant steels in various forms and sizes are produced each year.
The coil, strip, sheet and round blanks are sold on the high-growth Mexican market via an extensive sales and distribution network. In addition, the company has a sales subsidiary in Chicago (ThyssenKrupp Mexinox USA Inc.) and a central logistics center in Brownsville, Texas. Two thirds of production is sold to the USA.
The advanced production facilities at ThyssenKrupp Mexinox include three Sendzimir mills with downstream skin pass stands and cut-to-length equipment. The company`s quality system has been ISO 9002 certified since 1993. And when it comes to the environment, ThyssenKrupp Mexinox employs state-of-the-art pollution control technology. For example, two waste water treatment systems were put into operation in recent years: the purified water is used to irrigate the green areas of the plant site. The company also cooperates on research and development with a number of universities and technical institutes in the region.
ThyssenKrupp Mexinox, formerly Mexinox, was established in 1976 in San Luis PotosÌ, 400 kilometers north of Mexico City, as a state-owned cold rolling mill with French investment and technical support. The stainless steel producer is one of the city`s biggest employers. The privatization policy of the 1980s brought about a change in the ownership structure: From 1986 to early 1997, a group of Mexican investors, the Spanish company Acerinox and the German ThyssenKrupp Group each owned 33% of the company. In 1997 the latter increased its stake to 95.5 percent, since when ThyssenKrupp Mexinox, under the control of ThyssenKrupp Stainless, has been part of the Stainless business unit of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG .
With sales of over 4 billion euros and more than 12,000 employees in the triad markets of Europe, Asia and Latin America, ThyssenKrupp Stainless, Duisburg, is the world`s biggest supplier of stainless steel flat products and a leading producer of nickel-base alloys. ThyssenKrupp Stainless also includes German companies ThyssenKrupp Nirosta, ThyssenKrupp VDM and ThyssenKrupp Stainless Export, the Italian subsidiary ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni and the Chinese joint venture Shanghai Krupp Stainless.
