ThyssenKrupp Federn presents new developments in springs and stabilizers - Less weight = higher payload
ThyssenKrupp Federn is presenting its development capabilities, innovative production techniques and state-of-the-art technologies at the IAA commercial vehicles show in Hanover, Germany. With production facilities in Germany, the UK, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Mexico and Brazil, ThyssenKrupp Federn is one of the leading global players in this market.
ThyssenKrupp Federn achieves considerable cost advantages for its customers by using innovative production methods. One example is thermomechanical surface strengthening (TMSS), which optimizes the surface properties of spring steels. As a result, the lifetime of parabolic springs can be increased by up to 80 percent, and the potential this provides can be used to reduce weight. For example, the benefits of this new treatment allow a three-layer parabolic spring to be replaced by a two-layer version - a prime illustration of "less is more". Providing the same service lifetime, this new solution reduces costs and permits a higher payload.
As an innovative partner to the commercial vehicles industry, ThyssenKrupp Federn works closely with its customers to develop pioneering new suspension elements. One example is the multi-functional stabilizer link, developed in response to vehicle manufacturers` calls for savings on weight, cost, parts count and maintenance. The new stabilizer link provides both axle guidance and roll control. In vehicles with air suspension, it substitutes the stabilizer bar and two trailing arms, while also rendering various additional supports and bearings superfluous.
Other highlights in the production program of the springs specialist are weight-reduced tubular or short-stub stabilizer bars. The weight of components in a commercial vehicle is a decisive factor, as less weight equates to a higher payload. ThyssenKrupp Federn replaces solid stabilizer bars with tubular stabilizers or highly robust short-stub stabilizers. Using tubular stabilizers, weight can be reduced by up to 40 percent versus conventional solutions. With the solid short-stub stabilizers the reduced weight is achieved by optimizing the stub length.
