Prof. Dr. Ekkehard Schulz hands over check to Foundation Council chairman Bernhard Walter. Corporate and private donations toward reconstruction currently at DM135 million.

The chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG, Prof. Dr. Ekkehard Schulz, today handed over a check for DM50,000 to the fund for the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady), raising the total donated by ThyssenKrupp to DM330,000. In addition the company has made generous contributions in kind.

Schulz handed over the check in Dresden to Bernhard Walter, the former chief executive of Dresdner Bank who is chairman of the Frauenkirche Foundation Council. Schulz welcomed the decision to reconstruct the Frauenkirche and was impressed by the worldwide response to the appeal launched in 1990 to rebuild the church as a Christian center of world peace in the new Europe. "It is only natural that our Group should support this admirable project", said the ThyssenKrupp chief.

The company has not only donated money but has also contributed in kind: as early as 1992 ThyssenKrupp provided scaffolding to build the chancel free of charge, and the main scaffolding for the church was made available at cost. This scaffolding was one of several motifs used by ThyssenKrupp in an international image campaign. The advert features 10-year-old Alexander Walter who, amidst a sea of scaffolding, proudly proclaims: "My dad is helping rebuild the Church of our Lady in Dresden".

Alexander`s father, Dr. Gordon Walter, is managing director of Thyssen Hünnebeck Gerüst GmbH, where specialties include scaffolding for demanding historical and cultural projects.

Alexander joined Prof. Schulz in handing the giant-sized check to Foundation Council chairman Bernhard Walter. ThyssenKrupp had foregone the opportunity to place the Frauenkirche motif in a national daily newspaper and instead donated the amount this would have cost to the fund.

Bernhard Walter expressed his thanks not only for this current gesture but also for the company`s years of commitment to the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche. "ThyssenKrupp is a prime example of the way companies can help us both with cash and services," said Walter. Corporate and private donations to the fund currently total DM135 million.

Reconstruction work is progressing in phases and is scheduled for completion in 2005. The inner dome over the church, financed by Dresdner Bank, and the corner towers will be completed by 2002.
