Prof. h.c. (CHN) Dr. Ulrich Middelmann Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG and Vice Chairman of ThyssenKrupp AG, celebrates his 60th birthday on January 20, 2005.

Career:

From 1972 to 1977, Prof. h. c. (CHN) Dr. Ulrich Middelmann worked for the Microeconomics Institute of the Iron and Steel Industry in Düsseldorf. In 1977 he moved to Krupp Stahl AG in Bochum as assistant to the Management Board, becoming head of the Planning and Controlling department in 1980 and acquiring the title Senior Vice President in 1981.

In 1988 Prof. Dr. Ulrich Middelmann joined Fried. Krupp GmbH in Essen as a member of the investment committee of the Executive Board, and in 1989 he was made Senior Vice President Controlling for the entire Group. In 1992 Prof. Dr. Ulrich Middelmann was appointed to the Executive Board of Fried. Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp, Essen/Dortmund, with responsibility for Controlling and Mergers & Acquisitions. Following the merger of Thyssen AG and Fried. Krupp AG in 1999 he was appointed to the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG, Düsseldorf, where he was again responsible for Controlling and Mergers & Acquisitions.

Since October 2001 Prof. Dr. Ulrich Middelmann has been Executive Board Chairman of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG, Duisburg, and Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG. He is also a member of a number of national and international supervisory boards and advisory councils of industrial enterprises and banks.

A special honor was bestowed on Prof. Dr. Middelmann in 2003 when he was awarded an honorary professorship by the University of Tongji in Shanghai. He was one of the initiators of ThyssenKrupp`s involvement in the Sino-German college, which was established in 1998 to build a bridge between the Chinese and German cultures. Graduates also have the opportunity to complete a course of studies in German.

Prof. Dr. Middelmann, born in Limburg an der Lahn, is married with three sons.
