Prize for innovative industrial construction: ECCS Steel Design Award for ThyssenKrupp Stahl`s hot-dip galvanizing line in Dortmund
From today, Dortmund can boast another prize-winning building: on September 17 in Lucerne, the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) bestowed its Steel Design Award on ThyssenKrupp Stahl for the unconventional architecture of the building housing hot-dip galvanizing line 8 (FBA 8) on the site of the Dortmunder Westfalenhütte steel mill.
Among other factors, the jury was won over by the optimized design and the colorful facade of the building which sets it apart from other industrial structures. The jury summarized its decision as follows: "The award is in recognition of the impeccable steel design and the attempt to impart greater architectural quality to a type of building which is largely ignored."
"We are proud of this award for FBA 8 - it rewards our willingness to build unorthodox steel industrial structures which are nonetheless cost-effective and of outstanding technical quality," said Dr. Karl-Ulrich Köhler, Executive Board Chairman of ThyssenKrupp Stahl. "The FBA 8 building underlines ThyssenKrupp Stahl`s image as a modern industrial company. The facility is a highly successful reference and clearly illustrates the esthetics and elegance inherent in our steel materials."
In realizing FBA 8, which started operation in December 2001, ThyssenKrupp Stahl set new standards in the field of industrial construction. Firstly, the 350-meter long, 100-meter wide building with its centerpiece, the almost 70-meter high cooling tower shop, demonstrates that building with steel can be cost-effective and still offer a wide variety of interesting design options: trusses were used for almost all load-bearing members inside the building to save material, while the walls are made of insulated, horizontally fixed steel liner trays with a steel trapezoidal profile outer skin made by ThyssenKrupp Stahl`s Construction Elements group.
Secondly, FBA 8`s modern color design - based on the ReflectionsOne® collection developed for the Construction Elements group by color designer Friedrich Ernst von Garnier - shows that today`s industrial buildings do not have to be dull and monotonous, but can be given a friendly, vibrant appearance: the outer facade is designed in harmonious shades of blue and green, while the atmosphere inside the building is livened by pale greens and blues, warm yellows and pinks.
