Neurath power plant: Major order for ThyssenKrupp Hoesch Bausysteme
ThyssenKrupp Hoesch Bausysteme GmbH is to supply more than 400,000 square meters of steel roof and wall elements for the construction of two new lignite-fired power generating units in the Neurath district of Grevenbroich near Düsseldorf. It is the biggest single order the company has received in its almost 40-year history. Being built by Essen-based RWE Power AG, the Neurath power plant will be the first to feature a coordinated color concept.
The new 2,200 megawatt power plant has been under construction since the beginning of 2006 and is scheduled to start operation in 2010. According to RWE Power AG, the 2.2 billion two-unit facility will be the most modern lignite-fired power plant in the world. The color planning for the facades of the plant was equally ambitious: The coating experts from ThyssenKrupp Steel teamed up with the architects fcg Architekten and paint manufacturer Akzo Nobel GmbH to develop three new color shades for the new power plant.
Corrosion- and UV-resistant paints in finely graded metallic gray-blue shades are to be used for the facades in Neurath. The colors will ensure that the building blends in harmoniously with its natural environment. All the paints are from the extremely weather-proof PVDF (polyvinyl fluoride) paint system. The steel for the construction elements will be coated with the PVDF paints at the Color profit center of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG. With six coating lines in Duisburg and the Siegerland region, the profit center specializes in high-tech coil-coated steel products.
ThyssenKrupp Hoesch Bausysteme GmbH will use the coated steel to produce around 200,000 square meters of liner trays and the same volume of trapezoidal profiles for the interior and exterior sides of the double-shell wall structure to be used for the Neurath power plant. In addition, around 40,000 square meters of trapezoidal sheet is required for the roofing. The double-shell wall structure comprising liner trays and trapezoidal profiles with an intermediate layer of rock wool provides outstanding sound and heat insulation.
