Materials & Services segment: formwork and scaffolding services from a single source
In transport construction, it is possible to save money by having the formwork and scaffolding services provided from the same source: the construction companies are spared additional coordination duties, leaving them free to concentrate on the actual building work. In the "Besseringen Link" project, Thyssen Hünnebeck GmbH and its subsidiary Röro Bautechnik GmbH are currently demonstrating the advantages of purchasing formwork and scaffolding as a single service.
The Besseringen Link is being constructed to connect the B51 main road to the A8 highway in the Saarland region of Germany. Its principal components are the four bridge structures BW 1461 through 1464. Bridge 1461 is a so-called shore span bridge which branches directly off the A8 highway. It links into bridge number 1462 which spans the River Saar. This is followed by bridge number 1463 over the B51 road and bridge number 1464 over a railway line. Construction is being carried out by a consortium formed by the Saarland branch of Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG and Modernbau GmbH, Saarbrücken.
With the exception of the cantilever bridge over the Saar, the formwork for the superstructures uses Napla nail plate frames from Thyssen Hünnebeck. The scaffolding is being supplied by Röro Bautechnik. The first bridge (BW 1461) is a double-webbed slab-and-beam bridge 200 meters in length, 12.74 meters wide and with a web height of 1.70 meters. The nail plate frames are joined together to make five meter wide elements so they can each be transferred to the next sections.
The designers developed a joint nail plate frame design for both the single-webbed bridge constructions 1463 and 1464: they used CAD technology to overlap the basic cross sections in such a way that the 105 frames employed ? placed on a Röro scaffold ? could be used twice. The formwork for bridge 1463 was positioned first, since it had the smaller cross section. The formwork for the second cross section was then applied using nailed-on (i.e. doubled-up) semi-cantilever frames. The area of formwork on bridge 1463 amounted to 630 square meters, with 911 square meters required for the second bridge.
Structure 1462 is being built across the River Saar in cantilever design and is scheduled for completion by June 2000. The bridge is 222 meters long, 13.5 meters wide and has a maximum span of 98 meters. Thyssen Hünnebeck assembles the system formwork on a Dyckerhoff & Widmann carriage and moves it outwards in either direction from the pier in two stages. In this way, the structure is extended five meters further over the River Saar every week.
The formwork for the abutments and wings of all bridge structures in the Besseringen Link is made using the Manto large frame system. The visible surfaces of the abutments have board formwork or a smooth formwork skin applied to them on site. The bridge piers were built using Hünnebeck ES 24 element formwork, which was completely prefabricated including all recess boxes required for the geometry. Hünnebeck supplied exactly 2,854.87 square meters of formwork for the abutments and piers together. The transport construction and materials costs unit of Thyssen Hünnebeck was entirely responsible for the formwork from the preliminary planning stage, CAD analysis and production planning through to manufacture. This unit handles projects of this type all over Germany from its headquarters in Flörsheim near Frankfurt.
