Krupp Uhde to convert one of the world`s biggest chlorine plants for Bayer AG
Krupp Uhde is to convert an existing amalgam electrolysis plant in Leverkusen, the traditional site for chlorine production, to the modern, energy-saving Krupp Uhde membrane cell technology for Bayer AG. This is now the third successive order to be received by Krupp Uhde for conversion of a Bayer AG plant to chlorine-alkali electrolysis following the plants in Uerdingen and Dormagen
The aim of the conversion concept is to remove the amalgam cells from the existing cell room and integrate Krupp Uhde`s single-element membrane electrolysers therein. The plant will have an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes of chlorine and 338,000 tonnes of caustic soda solution.
Krupp Uhde will be responsible for engineering the cell room, which will include supplying the electrolysers and necessary equipment, the assembly and supervision of commissioning. This new plant will come on stream in the first quarter of 2003.
Taking new plants, revamps and conversions into account, Krupp Uhde has now built plants with an annual production capacity of almost 4 million tonnes of caustic soda solution worldwide and is thus one of the leading suppliers of chlorine plants based on membrane technology.
Krupp Uhde is a company in the ThyssenKrupp Technologies segment and has a workforce of 3,200 employees worldwide. The company`s activities focus on the design and construction of chemical and other industrial plants in the following fields: fertilisers, organic chemicals and plastics, electrolysis, oil & gas and pharmaceuticals.
