Krupp Drauz starts production on new hydroforming press
Green Capital: urban gardening at thyssenkrupp From water axis to Green Axis: thyssenkrupp launched an urban gardening project for everyman at its headquarters today as part of the European Green Capital – Essen 2017 program. Essen Mayor Thomas Kufen and thyssenkrupp CHRO Oliver Burkhard put the first spades in the ground before students from neighboring schools began planting alongside thyssenkrupp apprentices and children from the Miniapolis daycare center. For the project thyssenkrupp has drained the campus’s 4,800-square meter water axis and turned it into a huge garden. Among other things there’s a sandpit for the kindergarten kids, herb garden, beach volleyball court and spaces to relax. A diverse summer program of activities is planned before the project ends in September. Oliver Burkhard: “thyssenkrupp is an integral part of Essen. The company has its roots here, as well as its headquarters. We invite the students from neighboring schools and all residents of the city to get involved in the project.” Thomas Kufen: “The Green Axis is a fantastic project because it supports what the ‘Green Capital’ is all about: engagement by and with the people of the city. thyssenkrupp inviting us onto its campus and making our city greener and more sustainable is a good idea.” „The Green Axis symbolizes the successful turn from grey to green,” Simone Raskob added. “It is right here that with the thyssenkrupp campus a process of change and renewal began that has contributed to winning the title European Green Capital”, explained the Head of the Essen Environmental Department, who also serves as leader of the Green Capital Project. To create the Green Axis thyssenkrupp filled the water axis basin with 1,000 cubic meters of sand, gravel, bark mulch and potting soil. The company has planted around 2,500 grasses and shrubs, 450 roses, 1,000 summer flowers and 600 vegetable and herb plants and soft fruit. In addition there are 49 raised beds made from wood pallets. It’s important to thyssenkrupp that the project is as sustainable as possible. When the Green Axis project ends in September the company will give away all the plants, while the soil will be used to reclaim old thyssenkrupp waste heaps. thyssenkrupp is a diversified industrial group with traditional strengths in materials and a growing share of capital goods and service businesses.
