Honorary doctorate from Berlin Technical University for Prof. Dr. Ekkehard D. Schulz
Berlin Technical University has awarded the Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG, Prof. Dr. Ekkehard D. Schulz, an honorary doctorate (Dr. rer. oec. h.c.) acknowledging Prof. Dr. Schulz`s outstanding services and merits in technology and management. Berlin Technical University is one of the universities with which ThyssenKrupp has close ties. Since the 2001/2002 winter semester, a series of joint presentations has been run in each semester by ThyssenKrupp AG and the university`s Innovation and Technology Management faculty where top-level company executives deliver presentations about specific subjects.
Ekkehard D. Schulz, born 1941 in Bromberg, studied metallurgy at Clausthal Technical University, where he also gained his doctorate in 1971. Clausthal Technical University awarded him an honorary professorship in 1999.
From 1967 to 1972, Prof. Dr. Schulz was a member of the scientific staff and chief engineer at Clausthal Technical University and subsequently worked in various divisions focusing on technology within the Thyssen group until 1984. In 1985 he became deputy member and in 1986 full member of the Executive Board of Thyssen Stahl AG, responsible for the production directorate. He later took over the entire technology directorate in 1988. In 1991 he was appointed Chairman of the Executive Board of Thyssen Stahl AG and at the same time member of the Executive Board of Thyssen AG. He was also appointed Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG in 1997. In 1998, Prof. Dr. Schulz became Chairman of the Executive Board of Thyssen AG. From March 1999 to September 2001 he was one of the two Chairmen of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG and at the same time Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG in Duisburg. Since October 2001, he has been the sole Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG.
Prof. Dr. Schulz is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of acatech, the Council of Technical Sciences of the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities. Acatech`s aim is to promote dialog about forward-looking technologies and their influence on sustainable growth and intensify exchanges between the sciences, business and politics. In addition, Schulz is moderator of the "Initiativkreis Ruhrgebiet" organization where representatives from at present 55 leading companies and public institutions are working together to provide stimuli for structural change in the Ruhr area and to promote the region`s image. Prof. Dr. Schulz is also Chairman and member of a number of supervisory boards and advisory councils.
