Extremely high-strength and wear-resistant: New materials from ThyssenKrupp Stahl
ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG is presenting two newly developed and extremely high-strength steels at the Bauma trade show in Munich (hall 6, booth 437): N-A-XTRA® 800 and XAR® 400 W. N-A-XTRA® 800 is a high-strength quenched and tempered special structural steel for use in highly stressed structures such as cranes, container handling systems and mining equipment. The XAR® 400 W special structural steel is wear-resistant even at high temperatures.
ThyssenKrupp Stahl`s N-A-XTRA® materials were previously available with minimum yield points of 550, 620 and 700 MPa. The product range has now been extended to include N-A-XTRA® 800 steel with a minimum yield point of 800 MPa. This provides structural steel engineers and designers with additional options to achieve the most cost-efficient balance of weight and load-carrying capacity. High-strength special structural steels can be used in lighter gauges to allow more lightweight construction. For example, compared with the general purpose structural steel St 52-3, N-A-XTRA® 800 delivers the same strength with around 60% lower place thickness.
N-A-XTRA® steels are low-alloy materials which owe their strength mainly to a special heat treatment - water quenching and tempering. By contrast, they have a low proportion of strength-enhancing alloying elements. This means that N-A-XTRA® steels are particularly easy to weld, cut and bend. They are also so tough that they can still be used reliably in temperatures down to minus 60 degrees Celsius. N-A-XTRA® steels are supplied as plate in thicknesses of 3 - 100 mm and widths of up to 3,200 mm.
XAR® 400 W is the newest addition to ThyssenKrupp Stahl`s family of wear-resistant special structural steels. These materials, alloyed with elements such as chromium and niobium, were developed for high-abrasion applications. Typical examples are truck dumper bodies, scrap grapples, earthmoving machinery and crushers. ThyssenKrupp Stahl supplies these materials in hardnesses of 300 to 600 Brinell. The newly developed XAR® 400 W has a hardness of 400 Brinell, ensuring a service life around five times longer than that of standard structural steel. The material is also highly heat-resistant, enabling it to be used in temperatures of up to 400 degrees Celsius. XAR® steels are supplied as plate or strip. The heat-resistant XAR® 400 W variant was developed for applications in e.g. cement plants or coal mills.
