Emden-based Nordseewerke lay down the keel for its first 3,400 TEU container ship
At 11:00 hrs on December 17th, 2007 the keel of the first container ship of the compact 3,400 TEU series was laid down at Nordseewerke GmbH – a company of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG. Following an old shipbuilding tradition, special guests of the customer, the shipping company and the shipyard nailed some coins to a block of timber. Then the first double-hull section of the ship, weighing about 260 tons, was put down on the block.
With this new container ship class the shipyard offers a solution to the requirements for bigger and bigger units caused by the growing carriage demands. These new and very compact container ships have been developed and designed by Nordseewerke and can be employed both as liner and feeder in a good economic sense. The ships are designed according to PANMAX standard, which means they are adapted to the maximum watergate width of the Panama Canal. Compared to their antecessor, the 2,700 TEU class, these ships are just 13 metres longer but can carry more than 700 additional containers.
This ship with the Yard No. 556 will be built for the GEBAB in Meerbusch. As for the last ships built, the shipping company will be the Elsfleth-based MARTIME. The launching of this ship will be in May 2008. Delivery is scheduled for August 2008.
The container ship will be built according to German Lloyd regulations and features the following main technical data:
Overall length approx. 228.50 m
Length between perpendiculars 218.22 m
Moulded breadth 32.20 m
Moulded depth 18.55 m

Deadweight (T=12.00 m) 42,500 t
Container capacity 3,414 TEU
Propulsion 100% MCR 28,800 kW at 104 rpm
