Commissioning of coal terminal in Rotterdam port underway - First ship successfully unloaded at start of December
"The unloading of the first sea ship from Canada at the new coal terminal at Rotterdam Europoort was successful, smooth and on-schedule," reports Thomas Heyer, managing director of Ertsoverslagbedrijf Europoort c.v.
The 67 million euro terminal is currently in the commissioning phase after a construction period of only 14 months. "The state-of-the-art terminal will start regular operation in March," says Heyer. Built under an investor/operator model, the terminal is situated close to an existing ore terminal and will be used to supply 5.5 million tons of imported coal a year from Australia, Canada and South Africa to the Schwelgern coking plant and the blast furnaces in Duisburg.
The unloading of the huge sea ships proceeds as follows: A continuous unloader with a capacity of up to 3,000 tons an hour first removes the coal from the ship`s holds. An almost seven kilometer long system of belt conveyors then transports the coal to two stacker/reclaimers where it is separated according to grade and stockpiled. Then it is loaded fully automatically into barges or rail cars and begins its journey to Duisburg either up the Rhine or by rail.
