SAS SPIOENKOP in South Africa
On May 31, 2004, after a trip of 27 days, the MEKO® A-200 corvette SAS SPIOENKOP (Identification 147) built by Blohm + Voss GmbH arrived in her home port Simons Town (near Cape Town), where she will be equipped with weapons and electronics systems. The third of a total of four corvettes for the South African Navy was welcomed by her sister ship SAS AMATOLA (Identification 145). The SAS AMATOLA, also built by Blohm + Voss, is the type ship of this building programme and was handed over to the South African Navy on the 25th September 2003.
The second corvette, the SAS ISANDLWANA, is already being fitted out in Simons Town, whereas the fourth unit is scheduled to be christened and handed over on June 15, 2004. These two units are built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG in Kiel.
In December 1999, the European South African Corvette Consortium (ESACC) was entrusted with the building programme for these four corvettes. The German Frigate Consortium (GFC) comprising, among others, Blohm + Voss GmbH - the lead yard - and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG, is a member of ESACC.
