Launching of the 2,700 TEU Container Ship with the building no. 977 at Blohm + Voss
A 2,700 TEU container ship built at Blohm + Voss, which belongs to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, was christened today with the name COSCO PANAMA. Godmother of the ship with the building no. 977 was Anja Berlien, wife of Dr. Olaf Berlien, Chairman of the Excecutive Board at ThyssenKrupp Technologies AG.
Around 15,000 guests followed the christening and subsequent launch on the dock at Blohm + Voss. The numerous guests of honour as well as employees of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and their families had been invited on this occasion by Blohm + Voss GmbH, the client GEBAB (Gesellschaft für Konzeption und Betreuung privater Investitionen mbH, Meerbusch) and the Elsfleth shipping company MARTIME GmbH, which had been commissioned with the ship management.
Dr. Klaus Borgschulte, Managing Director of Blohm + Voss GmbH and Board Chairman of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG, was pleased that a launching was being celebrated again at Blohm + Voss after last year's successful launch of the COSCO BRISBANE. In his speech he thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the contract and above all gave a word of praise to the Blohm + Voss workforce for its commitment and flexibility. The launching of the COSCO PANAMA is the last launch of a container ship at Blohm + Voss GmbH in Hamburg for the time being. In accordance with the industrial concept of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG, Blohm + Voss GmbH will be concentrating in future on the construction of large-scale yachts and naval vessels.
The Managing Director of GEBAB, Dirk Schildwächter, acknowledged the excellent and reliable collaboration between client, shipyard and shipping company. In view of the prospering container-ship market, he assumed that the COSCO PANAMA would be an economic success.
The COSCO PANAMA is part of a building programme for a total of nine ships of the same type. The entire contract was awarded by the GEBAB to the companies of the former ThyssenKrupp shipyards, now ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Blohm + Voss GmbH received the order for the construction of the 2,700 TEU container ship in 2003.
