Restructuring at ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG

Markets are changing. Meeting customer requirements and providing top service are becoming paramount. This is true of all sectors, and the steel industry is no exception. In response to this trend, ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG is making improvements to its corporate structure to optimize customer communications and management efficiency. The company`s previous organization - which was purely function-based - is being systematically restructured to make it more process and customer-oriented, with Executive Board duties divided among three functional and three divisional directorates. This new structure will be presented to the Supervisory Board on November 28, 2002 and is planned to take effect from January 1, 2003.

"Our processes and workflows need to be faster, more efficient and more customer-oriented," says Dr. Karl-Ulrich Köhler, Chief Executive of ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG and Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG. Optimizing across functions provides great potential for ThyssenKrupp Stahl to manufacture and sell the product mix that it can produce better than any competitor. The divisions Steelmaking/Plate, Auto and Industry will be run as profit centers to speed up the change from thinking in terms of departments to thinking in terms of processes.

"Our employees and the Executive Board now face the joint challenge of breathing life into this new organizational structure," continued Köhler. He pointed out that the restructuring would eliminate functions, and with them jobs. However, there was sufficient scope to make personnel adjustments socially compatible, based on the existing redundancy scheme. In addition to transfers and contract termination agreements, retraining opportunities will also be available at the PEAG personnel and labor market agency in Dortmund. As in the past, the codetermination bodies will be involved in implementing the necessary measures.
