New modular steering column concept

Shorter installation times, lower weight, higher natural frequency and outstanding crash energy absorption – all features of the new modular steering column concept from ThyssenKrupp Presta. Despite the fact that parts count and weight have been significantly reduced, this innovative steering column meets all the requirements of the Euro NCAP crash test for a 5-star safety rating.

Safety takes absolute priority. The crash energy absorption function has been integrated into the steering column, providing an axial crash stroke of 60 – 100 mm. In addition, the position of the steering wheel lock has been optimized to offer knee protection in line with the latest safety standards and improved anti-theft protection.

ThyssenKrupp Presta Steering is also breaking new ground with the way the steering column is installed in the cockpit thanks to an optimized steel structure. In the past, complex components were needed to attach the steering column to the cross member. The new concept attaches directly to the cross member, optimizing the flow of forces and thus increasing the natural frequency while at the same time significantly reducing weight.

The modular design of ThyssenKrupp Presta’s new steering column allows it to be adapted to customer requirements. The steering column is being used for the first time in a design study for a complete cockpit, which has been developed in close collaboration with Johnson Controls and ThyssenKrupp Steel.
