The POSCO group of Seoul, South Korea, the world's fifth biggest steel producer, has commissioned Uhde GmbH of Dortmund, Germany, to build a new coke oven battery for expansion of their coke production. The new plant will be built at Pohang, a city on the east coast, about 300 km south-east of the capital Seoul. The coke oven battery, which will comprise 75 ovens with a chamber height of 6.7 metres and a total capacity of 750,000 tonnes a year of coke, is to come on stream in mid-2007.

The total contract is worth some ?35 million in total for Uhde GmbH and marks a further success in the over 20-year partnership between the South Korean POSCO group and Uhde's Coke Plant Technologies division. Eight expansion projects for the coke plants in Pohang and Gwangyang have now been completed.
