Internship helps young people in search of training
Wolfgang Clement, Federal Minister of Economics and Labor, visited the ThyssenKrupp Stahl training center on Thursday, July 28, 2005, and talked to participants in the ?Chance? Project about their experiences.
ThyssenKrupp Stahl is giving a second chance to young people who failed to find an apprenticeship training place the first time round. Together with the Duisburg-Marxloh-based "Werkkiste" youth organization and the Duisburg employment agency, ThyssenKrupp Stahl is helping young people prepare for their second attempt. At the steel company's training center, young people will spend about ten months learning basic skills and knowledge of use in various industrial occupations. In parallel with this they will be able to improve their academic and social skills. The aim of the course is to introduce the young people to theoretical and practical aspects of their chosen apprenticeship to boost their chances in the next selection round.
The project is now in its third year: 12 young people took part in the training scheme in 2004, 28 in 2005, and 20 young men will have the opportunity to train in 2006. The project has been a resounding success, with the majority of participants subsequently going on to find apprenticeship places at ThyssenKrupp Stahl or another company. For this reason the company and its partners, the Duisburg employment agency and "Werkkiste", will apply for a "Young People in Work" award.
