Uhde to engineer state-of-the-art coke plants with a total capacity of more than three million tonnes of blast furnace coke in Taiwan and China

Dragon Steel Corporation of Taiwan, a China Steel Corporation (CSC) company, has commissioned Uhde to build two new coke oven batteries at Taichung, some 130 km south-west of the capital Taipei. Uhde's scope of services under this contract includes the engineering, supply of special equipment items and supervision of the erection and commissioning activities. In all, the contract is worth around EUR50 million to Uhde.

Each of the two coke oven batteries will comprise 42 ovens with a chamber height of 7.3m and will produce approximately 1,700 tonnes per day of coke from around 2,200 tonnes of coal. At the same time, a new state-of-the-art gas treatment unit with a throughput of 62,000 m3/hour will be built. The first coke oven battery is due to come on-stream in December 2008. Uhde is already executing a contract awarded by CSC in early 2005 for the extensive major repair of two coke oven batteries in Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan. This is due for completion in late 2007.

Another contract for the construction of two new coke oven batteries in Asia has also been awarded to Uhde by Wuhan Iron and Steel Group Corporation (Wugang), which is seeking to expand its annual coke production capacity at Wuhan (Hubei Province), some 700km west of Shanghai, by two million tonnes of blast furnace coke. In order to meet Chinese environmental regulations, Uhde has also been entrusted with the engineering of a coke oven gas desulphurisation unit with an integrated sulphur recovery unit. The unit will be based on Uhde's proprietary VACASULF® and MONOCLAUS® processes. These processes are outstanding not only in view of the high degree of desulphurisation achieved, but also due to the comparatively low investment and operating costs in relation to the high purity of the sulphur recovered. The scope of services for the contract, which is worth some EUR20 million, includes the basic engineering, supply of special equipment items and supervision of the erection and commissioning activities. Uhde will join forces with its Chinese partner Anshan Coking & Refractory Engineering Consulting Corporation (ACRE) to carry out the detail engineering.

"These two contracts underline the good reputation we enjoy in the international coke technologies market with our broad spectrum of technological solutions, ranging from revamps to the construction of completely new plants," said Uhde Executive Board member, Hans-Joachim Lensing.
