Ten TWIN elevators for the new "Moscow Federation Tower"

Düsseldorf - ThyssenKrupp Elevator has received a contract to supply ten TWIN elevators for Tower B of the "Moscow Federation Tower". After completion in 2007, the 340 meter tall building (420 meters with antenna) will be Europe´ s tallest skyscraper and radically alter the Moscow skyline.

Consisting of two towers, the building with office, hotel, apartment and recreation areas is being built for the Russian Mirax Group on the 100 hectare site of the future international center "Moscow-City" on the banks of the Moskva. The smaller of the two towers is currently under construction. ThyssenKrupp Elevator will be supplying a total of 17 elevator installations to ensure the smooth transportation of roughly 7,000 people over the building´s 57 floors. Seven conventional elevators and ten TWIN systems will be installed in 17 shafts. A conventional solution would have required 27 shafts. Thanks to the TWIN, however, ten fewer shafts are needed, i.e. the Federation Tower will have significantly more usable space thanks to better utilization of the shaft area.

In this new elevator system, two cabs travel independently in one shaft. Even moving at different speeds, they can move to within a set minimum distance of each other. They can also travel in different directions, which means that they can also move towards each other. Each car has its own drive sheave motor and its own counterweight. However, both use the same guide rails. A four-stage TÜV-certified safety system ensures comfortable, reliable and safe transportation at all times.

The TWIN is designed particularly for buildings above 50 meters in height and should be combined with at least one conventional elevator to allow direct travel from the bottom to the top floor. In the case of the Federation Tower, a first group of six TWIN elevators will handle transportation between the first and the 30th floor, while a second group of four TWIN elevators will serve the 31st to 44th floors. In the first group, the upper cab will travel at a speed of 6 m/s and the lower one at 4 m/s, while in the second group the upper cab will run at 7 m/s and the lower one at 6 m/s.

The use of two cabs in one shaft makes it possible to transport the same number of people faster to their destination compared with a conventional solution. Taking the example of a group of four elevators, the TWIN is capable of transporting 40% more passengers, because with the same number of shafts, the TWIN has a much higher transportation capacity than conventional elevator systems. A further advantage is the saving of 25% construction volume, eliminating a complete shaft. In the case of the ten TWINs in Moscow, the savings are particularly great, due to the high rents for office space in the Russian capital, around Euro 106 per square meter per month and Euro 71,000 per year.
