Economics minister Dr. Gillo visits Magnesium Flachprodukte GmbH in Freiberg

Production line under consideration

After just one-and-a-half years of intensive research work on a pilot line, Magnesium Flachprodukte GmbH (MgF), a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG for flat magnesium products, can present impressive results. The Economics Minister of the state of Saxony, Dr. Martin Gillo, and Dr. Ulrich Jaroni, Executive Board member of ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG, visited the company in 2004 to see the progress made at first hand.

The new casting-rolling process is close to making the cost-effective production of magnesium sheet a viable proposition. Magnesium is an outstanding engineering material for ultra-lightweight designs. Alongside applications such as casings for cell phones and notebooks, the automotive industry could become a major customer for magnesium sheet "made in Freiberg". Well-known auto manufacturers are already requesting specimen sheets.

The company receives scientific support from the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology. The partners are collaborating on this development as part of a joint project funded by Saxony`s Ministry of Economics and Employment (SMWA). The university receives additional support from the Ministry of Science and Arts (SMWK). The goal is to establish Saxony as a center of magnesium technology, and Freiberg offers ideal conditions as a location, including when it comes to the decision on building a production line.
