Excellent docks utilisation at Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH
The fiscal year 2002/2003 has been concluded successfully with a total of 294 repair orders and a sales volume of 120 Million Euro. The current fiscal year develops in a positive way in spite of a tight economical situation.
Since October, 03 to the End of June 2004, 64 cruise liners, passenger ships, container vessels and tanker ships has been repaired, refurbished or reconstructed at Blohm + Voss Repair. For example the A`ROSA BLU,which has been provided with the typical characteristics of the ships of the AIDA line and left the yard as AIDAblu, the BLACK PRINCE, where a extensive overhaul work has been carried out as well as the BERKANE, which provided during its docking the unique scenery for the this year`s ZDF-hansetreff.
Still excellent dock utilisation
In the morning of August 17, 2004, the Danish Baltic Sea ferry PRINS JOACHIM was floated into Dock 16 of Blohm + Voss Repair. In the course of the docking period, the ferry of Scandlines Denmark will be equipped with more powerful engines, i.e. six MAK main engines with a total power of 23,000 kW. As a result, the crossing from Rostock to Gedser (DK) will be reduced from 120 to 105 minutes. In addition, two new Flender gearboxes and a waste heat boiler will be installed and the pipe and supply systems will be renewed as well.
To increase the power supply on board, the ferry will be provided with a new generator with a capacity of 1.500 kW. In addition to the extension of the monitoring and alarm system IMACS, the bridge equipment will also be modernized. Finally, the paint work of the hull will be renewed.
The second ferry, the KRONSPRINS FREDERIK, will arrive at Blohm + Voss Repair in October.
The MS EUROPA 5-star-plus luxury cruise liner from the Hapag Lloyd Kreuzfahrten GmbH is expected to arrive at the dock of Blohm + Voss Repair on 31 August 2004. Extensive modernisation will be carried out on the 198.6 metre long, 24 metre wide cruise liner by 14 September 2004. The MS EUROPA is the flagship of Hapag Lloyd`s fleet of cruise liners and offers the utmost in comfort for up to 408 passengers.
Modernisation works include the installation of a new fitness room, conversion of the "Lido Café" and completion of the new stern-side "Sansibar" which will be connected to the "Lido Café" via a stairwell. Following its modernisation, the former golf centre will house a large play area for children, which will invite them to play, do arts and crafts and just hang out in the future. A new air-conditioning system will also be installed for the whole of the newly-created passenger areas. Furthermore, the storage spaces for the ZODIAK rubber dinghies located on board including the accompanying storage rooms and the disembarking cranes are being renewed / re-designed.
Upon completion of her modernisation works on 14 September 2004, the MS EUROPA will be setting off on a 19-day cruise which will take it from Hamburg to Norway, Iceland, Greenland and on to Montreal.
To the project of the past year belong for example: the embellishment of the museum-ship RICKMER RICKMERS, the modification of the cruise liner HANSEATIC and MAXIM GORKIY and the yearly refit of the passenger ship SAGA ROSE. A highlight was the third yard visit of the award-winning MEGA yacht LADY MOURA, which was built at Blohm + Voss in 1990.
Know-how and celerity as competitive edge
The factor time becomes more and more important for repair and conversionshipyards to hold their own on the international market. One of the reasons why Blohm + Voss Repair has been successful is that efficiency has been continuously improved, especially to ensure extremely short work procedures.
Routine work on cruise liners is often planned two years ahead. Blohm + Voss Repair profits from complex repair and conversion projects, which have been completed on time for years now. On cruise liners, mainly scheduled maintenance work is carried out. The short repair periods calculated by Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH are possible due to especially flexible structures.
Quality, safety and environment protection
Also in quality, safety, and environmental protection, Blohm + Voss Repair has set up structures ensuring the highest standard. Since December 2003, Blohm + Voss Repair, as a nationally and internationally operating company, has a certified Management System (IMS = Integrated Management System). With this, Blohm + Voss Repair proves that modern yards are able to meet the high environmental requirements while observing the work and safety regulations in an economic way.
Blohm + Voss Repair has three floating docks and one graving dock at its disposal. Up to ten ships may be berthed at the quays and in the docks at the same time. There are only few yards world-wide being able to dock ships of almost any size.
Part of the core business of Blohm + Voss Repair are container ships, ferries, cruise liners and North Sea shuttle tankers. As in the years before, the yard is prepared to carry out any kind of ship repairs, although LNG tankers, cruise liners, large ferries and mega yachts are gaining importance.
