Clean air with nickel-base materials and special stainless steels
Krupp VDM supplies around 770 tons to Turkey
A few days ago Krupp VDM GmbH made an initial delivery of 50 tons for a major order from Turkey. By mid-2002 the company will supply a total of 770 metric tons of highly corrosion-resistant nickel-base materials and special stainless steels for the flue gas desulfurization plant of the Afsin Elbistan B lig-nite-fired power station, not far from the city of Elbistan in eastern Turkey. Costing around 1.6 billion dollars, this new facility is Turkey`s biggest lignite-fired power station. It has four generating units each with 360 megawatts capacity. The first generating unit is scheduled to come on stream in 2003. The facility will be operated by TEAS, a nationalized utility based in Ankara.
The VDM materials will be used to build the four flue gas scrubbers, in which the flue gas is sprayed with limestone dissolved in water and the sulfur dioxide separated out. A by-product of this process is gypsum, which after corresponding processing can be used as a building material.
Krupp VDM presented TEAS with its plan for the construction of the scrubbers back in August 1997. The utility had originally planned a solution using rubber-coated materials. Key factors deciding in favor of VDM`s proposal were its benefits in terms of operating safety, economy and servicing. The scrubbers will be used to desulfurize the flue gas from the entire Elbistan B power station.
The scrubbers will be built using the high-alloy stainless steel Nicrofer 3127 hMo - alloy 31, which at some 737 tons is the biggest single item in the order. For the raw gas inlets, which are subject to higher corrosion loads, Krupp VDM is supplying 15 tons of the nickel-base alloy Nicrofer 5716 hMoW - alloy C-276. For safety reasons, wire made of Nicrofer S 5923 - FM 59 will be used as weld filler throughout the plant. Krupp VDM GmbH will supply around 20 tons of this material. Internal equipment subject to lower corrosive attack will, like the flue gas scrubbers, be made from alloy 31.
