Previous relief projects
ThyssenKrupp has already provided urgently needed help following the earthquake in Sichuan, hurricane Katrina and the tsunami in Asia.
Construction of a school in Chengdu
On May 12, 2008, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 shook the Chinese Province of Sichuan. Chengdu was among the cities worst affected. The earthquake destroyed whole villages and city districts, and entire streets, factories und schools collapsed. Donations from ThyssenKrupp AG and employees of Shanghai Krupp Stainless enabled the reconstruction of a school for handicapped children.
Help for hurricane victims
The “Convoy of Compassion” was a professionally organized relief operation initiated by ThyssenKrupp USA and ThyssenKrupp Services in summer 2005 to help the victims who lost everything to hurricane Katrina. Five giant trucks were sent to the affected regions loaded with water, food, medical dressings and other essentials. The “Convoy of Compassion” was an additional measure to supplement the financial aid provided by the Group: ThyssenKrupp USA donated one million US dollars to support employees whose homes had been destroyed or damaged and were not insured.
Tsunami in Asia
The devastating tsunami in Asia at the end of 2004 claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and left behind millions who, although they managed to save their own lives that day, lost everything else. For this reason, the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG released around €2.5 million in donations directly after the tsunami. At the same time, the Group Works Council launched the “One hour for Asia” campaign calling on all Group employees worldwide to donate money for the tsunami victims. This campaign showed how extremely willing people were to make donations: Group employees donated around €300,000 for the victims of the tsunami – even though many had already made private donations.
This money is to support long-term reconstruction projects to secure a sustainable future for those affected. The ThyssenKrupp relief efforts are focused on India and Thailand.
