There's more to steel than meets the eye
Innovative and smart, steel today is the number one industrial material. ThyssenKrupp Steel concentrates on flat steel products with strong growth potential and high value added. And the company is part of the international elite. It is a major global player in carbon flat steel.
System solutions worldwide
New developments are being made in steel all the time. Optimizing the material's properties and processability enables us to open up new applications and stabilize our position in competition with rival materials. To reduce weight in autobody construction we have developed materials and technologies which make mid-size cars more than 25% lighter while still satisfying ever tougher safety requirements. One key innovation have been ultrahigh-strength multiphase grades suitable for forming into body and vehicle components. Weight can also be saved on parts where the steel doesn't need to be the same thickness all over: Tailored blanks comprise sheets of differing gauge, grade and finish which are joined by laser welding. They can be used for doors, lift gates, floor and side beams.
Innovations
nnovations in the construction sector include new facade products and roofing modules with integrated solar panels. Whether it is domestic appliances, tv screens or means of transport and packaging: Wherever we look, we see steel.
ThyssenKrupp Steel is also a leader in the development of production technologies. For example, The compnay operates Europe's first ever carbon steel casting-rolling line in an integrated steel mill. Combining casting and rolling in a single step enables us to produce previously unattainable sizes and grades via a revolutionary short route. Another innovation is the world's most advanced cold rolling mill, reducing high-strength steel to particularly thin and lightweight sheet in large widths. ThyssenKrupp Steel's new blast furnace number 8 boasts leading environmental technologies. The furnace significantly undercuts all relevant prescriptive emissions limits ThyssenKrupp Steel has invested 80 million Euros to make sure that the blast furnace meets most demanding environmental standards.
Expansion of global presence
In carbon steel ThyssenKrupp Steel is increasingly focusing on internationalizing our coating, service and tailored blanks activities. Corresponding facilities have been constructed in China, Sweden, Italy; Poland, Turkey and Mexico. We are also expanding our steelmaking capacities with a new steel mill in Brazil and thereby strengthening our position in the European and NAFTA markets. A new processing plant with high-performance hot and cold rolling as well as coating facilities is currently being built in the USA.
