Born in 1945, studied mechanical engineering at Darmstadt University of Technology, and business administration at Aachen University of Technology, gaining his Dr. rer oec. from the Ruhr University Bochum in 1976. 2003 appointment as Honorary Professor by Tongji University at Shanghai and 2006 conferral of the honorary academic title of Dr. Ing. (E. h.) (Doctor of Engineering) by the Mechanical Engineering faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum.

Career:
From 1972 to 1977 Dr. rer. oec. Middelmann worked for the microeconomics institute of the iron and steel industry in Düsseldorf.
In 1977 he was appointed assistant to the management at Krupp Stahl AG in Bochum, becoming head, in 1980, and then vice president, in 1981, of the planning and controlling department. In 1988 he moved to Fried. Krupp GmbH, Essen, first as a member of the investment committee of the Executive Board, and then – from 1989 – as Senior Vice President of Corporate Controlling.
In 1992, Dr. rer. oec. Middelmann was appointed to the Executive Board of Fried. Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp, Essen/Dortmund, responsible for the Controlling and Mergers & Acquisitions directorates.
Dr. rer. oec. Middelmann has been Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG since October 2001. From October 2001 to September 2005 he was also Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG. From October 2005 to March 2009 he was responsible for Controlling and Mergers & Acquisitions as Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG. From December 2006 to March 2009 he was also responsible for Corporate Finance, Investor Relations, Accounting and Financial Reporting, Taxes and Customs, and Materials Management. Since April 2009 Dr. rer. oec. Middelmann has been concentrating on the implementing of the new Group structure and the corporate program ThyssenKrupp PLuS. He is also responsible for the area of compliance.
He is also a member of a number of national and international supervisory boards and advisory councils of industrial enterprises and banks.
