Born in 1962, studied business administration at the Technical University in Berlin, gained doctor's degree in 1992.

Career:
From 1984 to 1988 Dr. Berlien was commercial manager of his parents' company. He then worked for IBM Deutschland GmbH in Berlin and Mainz. After completing a traineeship in the Controlling department, he was placed in charge of performance measurement and appointed product controller for magnetic head production before becoming product controller for all products of the Berlin plant in 1991. In 1992 he was appointed Head of Plans & Controls of IBM Deutschland Entwicklung GmbH in Stuttgart/Berlin. In 1993 he moved to Buderus Heiztechnik GmbH in Wetzlar as Head of Controlling and Commercial Manager. In 1994 he was additionally appointed Commercial Managing Director of Buderus Ungarn Kft. in Budapest.
In 1996 Dr. Berlien became Head of the Industrial Metrology Division of Carl Zeiss in Oberkochen, Chairman of the Management Board of Carl Zeiss Industrielle Meßtechnik GmbH, Oberkochen and President of CZ IMT Corporation in Minneapolis/USA.
From 1999 to March 2002 as member of the Executive Board of Carl Zeiss, he was responsible for Finance and Controlling, Information Technology, Personnel, International Sales and the Industrial Metrology Division.
In April 2002 Dr. Berlien was appointed to the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG and he became Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Technologies AG in February 2004.
