ThyssenKrupp support projects for tsunami victims
Medical Centers for Aceh/Sumatra
In response to the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia at the end of December 2004 the ThyssenKrupp Group is donating medical centers for the Aceh region of Sumatra. These medical centers provide diagnosis and initial medical care for the population in the event of disease and accidents. As well as medical buildings, the centers will also comprise accommodation for doctors and specialist personnel.
Indonesia suffered over 200,000 deaths in Sumatra and by far the most devastating infrastructure damage in the tsunami-affected region. In the area of medical care, in particular, major problems still exist. Via the responsible health ministry in Jakarta, the four medical centers will be donated to Aceh province, which will operate them together with the local health authorities. The specifications for the medical equipment and medicines will also be drawn up in conjunction with the responsible health authorities.
Discussions on building the infrastructure for the medical centers (foundations, electricity and water supply) are currently taking place with an engineering and construction company in Jakarta. The delivery and installation of the first medical centers is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2005.
We will keep you informed here about the progress of the work.
