Japan

Relations between Japan and ThyssenKrupp's predecessor companies Thyssen and Krupp date back to the time of the Meiji Restoration in the mid-19th century and are characterized by a mutual exchange of knowledge and experience. In 1894 Princes Komatsu and Yamashina visit Krupp's plants in Essen. Numerous reciprocal visits by high-ranking delegations strengthen the business relations between Japan, Thyssen and Krupp in the subsequent decades. In this period Japanese customers take delivery of among other things rails, locomotives, coking plants and rolling mills made by predecessor companies of today's ThyssenKrupp Group.

The Group's activities in Japan today focus on the supply of body, powertrain and chassis components to the Japanese auto industry, the production of large-diameter antifriction bearings for wind turbines and tunnel boring machines and the sale of stainless steel, nickel products and tubular products. Local ThyssenKrupp companies from the Steel, Stainless, Technologies and Elevator segments employ around 230 people.

ThyssenKrupp also has a Group Representative office in Tokyo.

All details relate to to the 2007/2008 fiscal year, Annual Report, as of September 30, 2008.
